Thunderbird Eats: Bringing Innovation and Tradition Together

Thunderbird Eats was born from a shared love of candy between mother-daughter team Sherri Cook of Huu-ay-aht First Nation and Saryta Dick, who is from both Huu-ay-aht and Tseshaht First Nations. When traditional candy began causing problems for Saryta’s braces and Sherri’s dental work, they discovered freeze-dried candy; a sweet treat that melts in your mouth and is gentler on teeth. Inspired by its popularity, they turned their discovery into a business.

With support from NEDC, including workshops, mentorship, and a microloan, Thunderbird Eats purchased its first freeze dryer and began selling to friends and family. The business quickly grew, expanding into local markets and building a loyal customer base throughout the Alberni Valley and beyond.

At just 12 years old, Saryta became the youngest person in Port Alberni to receive a business licence.

While freeze-dried candy launched the business, their vision extends far beyond sweets. Thunderbird Eats is now expanding into freeze-dried Indigenous foods such as seafood chowder, elk soup, and deer spaghetti, helping connect Indigenous families living away from home with the flavours and traditions they cherish.

Their story is a testament to how passion, perseverance, and community support can turn a simple idea into a thriving business.
