Leading with Purpose: Ian Simpson’s Vision for Snuneymuxw’s Future

Nanaimo, BC — Economic development is often measured through investments, partnerships, and new opportunities. For Ian Simpson, however, the work has always been about something much deeper: creating opportunities that honour the generations who came before while building a stronger future for those yet to come.

That perspective came to life during a recent keynote address, when Ian reflected on his grandmother, Mildred Isabelle Simpson (née White), who helped raise him and remained one of the most influential people in his life.

As he spoke about Snuneymuxw First Nation's first casino, Ian found himself imagining how proud his grandmother would have been to walk through its doors. Not simply because it was a casino, but because it represented generations of resilience, determination, and a Nation creating opportunities on its own terms.

Not long afterward, during a celebration recognizing the River Rock acquisition, a Musqueam Elder approached Ian and asked, "Are you Mildred's son?"

She shared memories of visiting Nanaimo, where she and Ian's grandmother would spend time together sitting on the beach. Through that unexpected conversation, Ian was reminded that the relationships created by those who came before us continue to shape our journeys today.

It was a powerful reminder that economic success is never only about business. As Ian reflected, "Economic success is never only about business. It is about family, community, relationships, and carrying forward a legacy."

These reflections offered a glimpse into the values behind Snuneymuxw's remarkable economic journey. As Ian continues to help advance economic growth for his Nation, his focus remains firmly on creating opportunities that strengthen community, honour culture, and inspire the next generation of Indigenous entrepreneurs and leaders.
