Port Hardy, B.C. — Hardy Buoys Smoked Fish Inc., a long-standing coastal seafood processor and retailer, has officially transitioned to Indigenous ownership under the Hardy Buoys Smoked Fish Limited Partnership, marking a significant milestone for Indigenous-led economic development in the seafood sector.
An announcement ceremony held on March 19, 2026, at the Hardy Buoys processing plant brought together partners, leadership, and community members to mark the occasion.
The partnership includes the Kwakiutl Nation Development Corporation (KNDC), Upper Fraser Indigenous Sustainable Harvesters (UFISH), and Authentic Indigenous Seafood (AIS), which serves as general partner. Together, the partners aim to strengthen Indigenous participation in the seafood industry while supporting sustainable growth and long-term community prosperity.
Attendees participated in guided plant tours showcasing salmon processing and packaging operations, followed by a gathering at the Kwakiutl Big House featuring lunch and cultural performances.
Archie Little, NEDC Board Chair, said, “Inside the big house there was a real sense of peace, with dancers, singers, and community members all coming together—it was truly a meaningful experience.”
Daphane Nelson, Business and Co-op Developer, played a key role in coordinating legal, accounting, and partnership efforts. “I knew that NEDC was the right fit for the partnership. They understood this was more than a business transaction and worked hard to bring the deal together,” she said.
This transition reflects a shared commitment to community, culture, and economic sustainability. Congratulations are extended to all partners involved in bringing this meaningful collaboration to life.
