Snuneymuxw First Nation and Petroglyph Mark Major Milestone with Cannabis Licensing Approval

Nanaimo, B.C - Receiving cannabis licensing marks a major milestone for the Snuneymuxw First Nation and Petroglyph, representing the culmination of nearly seven years of planning, leadership, and development. Under the guidance of CEO Ian Simpson over this period, the Nation pursued a deliberate strategy to enter the cannabis industry, beginning with the launch of its first Coast Salish cannabis retail store and followed by plans for a micro-cultivation facility. This reflects a Nation-led approach focused on long-term, sustainable economic growth.

This achievement was made possible in part through financing support from New Relationship Trust (NRT), Indigenous Cannabis Fund and NEDC. The funding provided critical support to advance the investment and bring the Nation’s cannabis strategy to fruition.

The licensing also directly supports Snuneymuxw First Nation’s vision of self-determination and economic independence. Through the Petroglyph Development Group (PDG), all profits are returned to the Nation, strengthening its ability to reinvest in community priorities. The cannabis industry is also creating meaningful opportunities for members to pursue careers as master growers, participate in horticulture training, and access new employment pathways.

Petroglyph is currently focused on bulk sales to generate initial revenue while scaling production capacity to pursue Processing 2.0 and EU GMP certification by year-end, positioning the facility for international exports. Supply agreements are already in place with partners in Portugal and the UK, alongside agreements with established producers and brands. The company is also developing its own branded products, including edibles, pre-rolls, and vapes, while partnering with the 1809 Cannabis Nursery to expand highly sought-after generics for both local and international markets. These developments are expected to support significant growth and create additional full-time employment opportunities in the coming year.

The benefits extend well beyond today, with future revenues expected to support key community initiatives such as elder support programs, annual band contributions, and expanded services for members. The long-term goal is to build lasting, intergenerational economic strength for the Nation.

While the journey included challenges, particularly navigating a highly regulated industry, taxation complexities, and early barriers to financing, the Nation remained committed to its vision. Investment in a craft, small-batch production model has proven successful and validated the long-term strategy.

With licensing now secured and the industry moving toward greater stability, Snuneymuxw First Nation and Petroglyph are well positioned for continued growth and future expansion opportunities.
