The Nuu-chah-nulth Economic Development Corporation (NEDC) was incorporated in 1984 to assist the Nuu-chah-nulth to achieve economic and social independence through the contribution of financial assistance and advisory services to individual and tribal business development initiatives. In 1997 eligibility criteria was expanded to include all Aboriginal people residing and operating within the Nuu-chah-nulth territory.  NEDC is incorporated under the Canada Corporations Act as a not-for-profit organization.  The corporation is exempt from income tax under section 149 of the Canadian Income Tax Act.

Vision Statement
To continue to develop and grow to be the best Aboriginal Corporation dealing with financial, banking and business development services which will play a major role in helping Nuu-chah-nulth communities become healthy, wealthy and socio-economically independent by seizing all existing and emerging opportunities and building on the new economy.

Purpose
The objectives of the Nuu-chah-nulth Economic Development Corporation (NEDC) are to promote and assist in the development and establishment of new and existing business enterprises both on & off reserve by:

  • Providing commercial financing to both eligible individual and community owned businesses.
  • Assisting in the financing of feasability studies and the development of business plans for large projects.
  • Accessing contributions for tribal and individual enterprises.
  • Promoting Youth Entrepreneurship.
  • Assisting clients in acquiring and/or enhancing their management skills.
  • Improving employment opportunities for the Nuu-chah-nulth.
  • Providing on-going business and financial advice.

The corporation also continues to work toward the strategic corporate goals of financial self-sufficiency and service expansion.

Corporate Structure

The Board of Directors
The operations of the Nuu-chah-nulth Economic Development Corporation (NEDC) shall be governed by the Board of Directors of the Corporation. The Board is comprised of one member from each of the 14 member Tribes of the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council (NTC), and an appointee from the NTC, normally the Vice-President.

Nuu-chah-nulth Territory
The northern boundary of Nuu-chah-nulth territory begins on the west coast of Vancouver Island at Brooks Peninsula and the southern boundary is at Port Renfrew. The territory extends inland about halfway across the island to encompass Gold River and Port Alberni.
